| WHAT IS PREVENTION OF SEXUAL ASSAULT? Maybe we can start by stating what prevention is not. When some people hear prevention of sexual assault they see visions of self-defense classes, grasping their keys in their hands as they find their car in a deserted parking lot, or teaching young girls the do's and don'ts of "suggestive" fashion. This is what big brained sociologists call risk reduction. You might be able to reduce your risk of being a victim of a small percentage of sexual assault by following these tips. And though these tips might stop individuals in certain cases from being victimized, this does not prevent sexual assault from happening on a community-national-international level. CASA is committed to educating boys and girls, men and women, all of us, in ways that change the attitudes, behaviors, and environments that lead to sexual assault. It is important that each individual knows what they should do to keep themselves safe in a world that is full of violence and assault. But prevention of sexual assault takes a look at that world and attempts to make it less violent more healthy. It's big work. But we believe we can do it. Here's what we are doing right now: |
